Abdominal Pain and Tenderness

Below is a chart that allows selecting abdominal pain and tenderness codes easily. Some of the codes are three digits and some are five digits based on location. You may notice that there are codes for Upper Abdominal Pain and Lower Abdominal Pain but no corresponding codes for tenderness in those locations. I personally do not understand the rationale behind this discrepancy because it forces the use of multiple codes instead of one in those cases of Upper Abdominal Tenderness or Lower Abdominal Tenderness. Hopefully this can be updated in future revisions of the ICD code set.
